The Great Dismal Swamp consists of about 112,000 acres of wetland forests, waterways, and a lake and is located in Southeastern Virginia near Suffolk.
The lake inside of the swamp is called Lake Drummond. It is one of only 2 naturally occuring lakes in Virginia.
The rough terrain was once home to maroons as it provided a sanctuary for enslaved people who managed to escape their captors.
The swamp is home to many species... including black bears! I even saw one (from my car) when I visited.
