As a kid, I remember schools and families going apple picking in Virginia during the fall and I always thought it was one of the coolest seasonal activities! As an adult, I still agree!

Virginia has a deep apple history and we even have a festival in Winchester that celebrates the famous fruit. In fact, Virginia was the nation’s top apple producer before the Civil War (and then our farmers went to war and our industry declined).

Nowadays, we may not be a mass producer of apples, but we definitely celebrate fall after our blisteringly hot summers, and the Virginia apple orchards and pumpkin patches become a popular destination activity during the season.

Not only will you get to enjoy the delicious food, but also the stunning views provided by the High Peak Mountain. Some of the best fruits here include apples, peaches, blueberries, and blackberries, and the orchard is especially known for its press apple cider.

The orchard presses fresh cider every week between September and December, and right around then, you will be able to visit to pick fresh apples.

The best seasons for picking apples in Virginia are in the summer and fall, specifically between July and September depending on the type you want.

The farm also features tons of animals, a nature trail, and picnic tables.

You can easily get quantity amounts of apples and pumpkins, too. Some of the other fruits and vegetables available include asparagus, blackberries, peaches, plums, and pumpkins.

5. Stribling Orchard

Stribling Orchard is one of the best pick your own apple and peach orchards in Markham, Virginia.

The website includes dates for September and October where you will be able to visit and pick certain types of apples yourself. In addition, the orchard offers the Apple Butter Festival, which takes place on the first and third Saturdays in October.

Here, you will be able to take part in the apple butter-making festivities, as well as purchase apples, jams, jellies, honey, and cider.

8. Fruit Hill Orchard

For five generations, the Fruit Hill Orchard has been operating in Palmyra, Virginia with its start in Winchester.

9. Albemarle Cider Works & Vintage Virginia Apples

Some of these varieties can’t be found anywhere else. In addition, besides apples, you will be able to check out some peaches, pears, and plums. The farm also makes its own cider, which can be purchased on site.

However, keep in mind that you can’t pick your own fruits because of the small size, but you can purchase the apples in the tasting room.

10. Johnson’s Orchard

This family-owned and operated farm is located near the Blue Ridge Mountains and Peaks of Otter, as well as the National D-Day Memorial, so there are plenty of things you could do nearby during your visit.
