Top Campgrounds near Richmond VA

Pocahontas State Park

Distance from Richmond: 24 minutes (20 miles)
Location: 10301 State Park Rd, Chesterfield, VA 23832

Located approximately 24 minutes away from Richmond, Pocahontas State Park is a lovely place for camping enthusiasts and it is the biggest state park in Virginia with a size of 7,950 acres.

The area of the park offers a wide selection of activities like picnicking, music concerts, boating, camping cabins, hiking (over 90 miles of trails!), and also some interesting historical sites.

There are also family-friendly programs to entertain young visitors.

The park is also a great place for those that love fishing – they are able to take to Swift Creek Lake… a lake that is around 225 acres in size. There are also Civil War Battlefields in close proximity for history buffs.

In Pocahontas State Park, camping is available all year round. The park offers 132 single-family campsites, 6 cabins, and 6 group sites, and 4 yurts. Sixty sites are able to be reserved and the rest are first-come, first-serve. 

Water, electricity, grills, lantern holders, and picnic tables are available for every site. At the campground, it is possible to have access to drinking water, flushable toilets, showers with hot water, and a dump station. 

In the Nature Center, you can learn more about the park and obtain maps and see what native wildlife exists at Pocahontas State Park.

The Visitors Center is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 AM to 4 PM and the park is open every day from 7:30 AM until dusk.

First Landing State Park

Distance from Richmond:  1 hour and 45 minutes (101 miles)
Location: 2500 Shore Dr, Virginia Beach, VA 23451

The beautiful and historical First Landing State Park is located approximately an hour and a half away from Richmond right off of the Chesapeake Bay, near the dunes of the beach at Virginia Beach.

This is where the first time the English Colonists made landfall in North America.

First Landing State Park has many campsites (approximately 200 of them) and it is impressively one of the best places to go camping in Virginia Beach and the Tidewater region.

There are diverse places to stay overnight there whether you park an RV, pitch a tent, stay at a cabin, etc.

Shore Drive is located on the opposite side of the campground and has 20 cabins. The campsites can accommodate 50 RVs and have access to water and electricity for your comfortable camping.

First Landing also has some of the best hiking trails in Virginia Beach!

The park area near the Chesapeake Bay offers four comfortable yurts with queen size beds and access to water and electricity and indoor cooking facilities.

Lake Anna State Park

Distance from Richmond:  1 hour and 5 minutes (63.5 miles)
Location: 6800 Lawyers Rd, Spotsylvania Courthouse, VA 22551

Located in Spotsylvania County, Lake Anna State Park used to be the Goodwin Gold Mine site where gold was discovered for the first time in 1829.

Nowadays, the Virginia state park is a wonderful place for family vacations and several more activities for nature lovers.

Lake Anna State Park is located approximately one hour away from Richmond and has a beautiful beach along one of the most popular lakes in Virginia. 

For camping enthusiasts, the park offers 6 cabins, 10 two-bedroom cabins, 4 yurts, and two six-bedroom lodges. All campsites have access to electrical hookups and water.

This is definitely one of the best campgrounds near Richmond, VA.

At Lake Anna State Park, you can go hiking (it has 15 miles of wooded trails), biking, horse riding, swimming, boating, and partake in many other great activities.

During the summertime, the Visitor Center organizes nature and historical interpretive programs and exhibits where you can learn more about the park and the wildlife that calls it home.

Westmoreland State Park

Distance from Richmond:  1 hour and 5 minutes (63.5 miles)
Location: 145 Cliff Road, Montross, VA 22520

Situated within Westmoreland County, Westmoreland State Park stretches one and a half miles of the Potomac River and spans over 1,321 acres.

Westmoreland State Park is the perfect place for family activities because the park offers so many of them!

It is registered in the National Register of Historic Places and on its territory, it has an Olympic-sized swimming pool, snack bar, camp store, power-boat ramp, and adjacent bathhouse.

The park also offers guests to visit its visitors center where you can learn more about the park’s history and see what camping options exist. There are cabins, campsites, a playground, 6 miles of trails, boat rentals, and more. 

Westmoreland State Park’s campground has 155 sites for tents and 62 electrical hookups for trailers and RVs. There are also six cabins and 3 group campsites.

If you enjoy fishing, then the offshore breakwaters are the best place to enjoy it and for avid birdwatchers, you will have a great opportunity to see ospreys, kingfishers, American bald eagles, common terns, and many others. Just don’t forget your monocular for birdwatching!

While this might be a park close to the capital city, I think this is one of the best weekend getaways from Richmond and is best visited slowly!

Americamps RV Resort

Distance from Richmond: 17 minutes (16 miles)
Location: 11322 Air Park Rd, Ashland, VA 23005

Americamps RV Resort is located very close to Richmond and is only 17 minutes driving via Route 95. Once you arrive, you’re in a wonderful and very comfortable RV resort.

The park is offering a wide range of amenities and activities to make your weekend or trip very exciting year-round. 

The well-maintained Americamps RV Resort offers campers 8 tents,105 pull-thru sites, and an additional 79 easy access back-in sites with electricity hook-ups, laundry facilities, a bathhouse, a big pool, and wifi.

The knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff will also make sure that you have access to a BBQ area, fitness center, bikes, children’s playground, and much more. 

This lovely green area is not only a fantastic day trip from Richmond, but it is also one of the best places for a family vacation where you can relax, enjoy nature, eat delicious food, and more!

Shenandoah River State Park

Distance from Richmond: 2 hours 19 minutes (134 miles)
Location: 350 Daughter of Stars Dr, Bentonville, VA 22610

If you’re looking for one of the best campgrounds near Richmond, look no further than Shenandoah River State Park, one of Virginia’s most underrated state parks (and one that is often overshadowed by a national park with a similar name)!

This park is open daily from 8am until dusk and the visitor center is open 7 days a week from 9am until 3pm.  

Open year-round, Shenandoah River State Park has multiple camping options for guests ranging from tent-only sites to electric water camping to yurts, cabins, and beyond.

You must make a reservation to camp at the state park. 

There are 31 sites at the campground and they have water and electric hookups for tents and RVs up to 60 feet long.  There are also restrooms, hot showers, fire rings, picnic tables, and more available for campers.

Shenan D’s Land

Distance from Richmond: 2 hours 19 minutes (134 miles)
Location: border of Shenandoah National Park

This is a primitive campsite that borders Shenandoah National Park and is located near Big Meadows. The land has many gorgeous waterfall hikes, vistas, wildflowers, birdwatching opportunities, and more.  

Shenan D’s Campground has 10 sites and you can bring up to 5 guests per site. ADA access.  Campfires are permitted as are pets.  There is a toilet on-site and showers available but there is no potable water, wifi, picnic tables, etc.  There are also no electrical or water hookups.
